If you have been considering EPDM rubber coatings for your roof, you have probably learned that it is easy to apply. This is one of the biggest benefits of the product. People can put it on their roof at their home or business, on their own, and without spending a fortune on a roofer. Of course, they need to have a roof that is flat or almost flat for the product, and if they are applying it to a large area, they still might find that it is easier to work with the professionals. For the most part though, the EPDM rubber coatings will be easy to install.

You do need to make sure you are prepared and that your roof is prepared for the process though. Fortunately, it is easy.

Know the Weather

One of the first and most important things you need to do is check the weather. This is something that many people never even think about. Naturally, you want to apply the EPDM rubber coatings when the weather is nice outside. It is easier on you as you are applying it, and it will cure faster. Even though you can apply it when it is cold, and it will start to cure, when you have some nice warm temperatures, it will be better. Try to aim for anything above 55 degrees. However, in the mid-70s is even better.

Prep the Roof

The next thing you need to do is prepare the roof for the installation. You will want to look for signs of obvious damage after cleaning off any initial debris. Some of the things you will be looking for on the roof include tears, gaps between the seams, cracks, or areas of corrosion. If you have a metal roof and you notice rust, take the time to remove it before you apply your EPDM rubber coatings, just because it will allow them to adhere better. Clean off the entire roof with water and scrub any areas that seem particularly dirty. Then, when everything has dried appropriately, you can start the application

Apply the Material

After the roof is clean and dry, you will get your materials ready to apply. Make sure you have measured your roof and that you have bought enough of the EPDM rubber coating material to cover the roof area entirely. Mix it up according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer, and then you can apply it like you would paint. Use rollers for the large areas and use brushes for any areas that need more of a delicate touch.

The preparation for the EPDM rubber coatings is relatively simple, but depending on the size and the condition of you roof, it can be time consuming. If you have a roof that is quite large, you might want to enlist some help in completing the project. Most people will find that on residential roofs and small commercial roofs, they can take care of everything on their own.
